Don't Get Scammed While Trying to Fix Your Credit

So you've pulled your credit report and the numbers aren't great. Maybe there are late payments, a collection account, or a score lower than you'd like. It happens. The good news is there are real steps you can take to improve your credit. The bad news is there are plenty of scammers ready to take your money and make things worse.

Before you hand a dollar to anyone promising to fix your credit, know this: anything a credit repair company can legally do, you can do yourself for free. Start at AnnualCreditReport.com to get your free report from all three major bureaus. If you spot a mistake, you have the right to dispute it by writing to the credit bureau and the business that reported the information. Beyond fixing errors, the most effective way to improve your credit is to pay your bills on time, pay down existing debt, and avoid taking on new debt. It takes time, but it works.

If you do consider hiring a credit repair company, know the rules. Before doing any work, they must give you a written contract explaining your rights, their services, and the total cost. You also have a three-day right to cancel without being charged. It is illegal for them to charge you upfront, promise to remove accurate negative information, or tell you to lie on credit applications.

Watch out for these red flags: anyone asking for payment before doing anything, guaranteed results, or suggestions to dispute everything on your report — even accurate items. One of the worst scams is being told to create a "new credit identity" using a different ID number instead of your Social Security number. That's federal fraud, and you're the one who gets in trouble.

If you need help, look for a nonprofit credit counseling agency, your local credit union, or if you're in the military, a personal financial manager. And if you've been scammed, report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
